Breathing new life into a well-deserving yacht

SEPTEMBER 21, 2019

Every now and then, we’ll hear of a yacht which has hit a patch of bad luck in its life cycle. For 47-meter (154 foot) Cherosa, her story began with her build in 1999 at Swiftships for an owner new to the yachting world. Originally designed to sleep ten guests and seven crew in comfort and simplicity by the time the build was completed, the owners had devised a number of changes which caused the naval architecture aspects of the vessel to fall short of the intended goals. This had the unfortunate consequence of seeing the owners undertake limited cruising and an overall unsatisfactory experience after her launch.  Then, to add salt to the wound, the vessel had a significant engine failure in 2013, jeopardizing her ability to maintain  Classification with ABS.

Things were looking bleak for Cherosa, and the owners consulted with DLBA Naval Architects. Our team proposed a refit package that would replace the prime engines, upgrade the entire electric plant while undergoing a five-year survey, and complete exterior coating renewal program. A yard was selected close to DLBA to enable the team to closely supervise the work. All was going well until an unfortunate discovery of excessive corrosion toward the end of the refit, led her owners to make the difficult decision to sell the vessel. Though she came with quite a history, things started looking up for Cherosawhen she was taken on by a new owner, and given the new name of La Polonia. She was then shipped to the Mediterranean and hit the water moving.

It’s been a thrill for all of us to know we were able to breathe new life into this vessel as we watched La Poloniashake off her clouds and explore some of the most beautiful destinations in Europe, and bringing her new owners joy on board.
