New EPA/IMO regulations (2021) regarding exhaust emission levels will apply to all new yachts over 24m (79 ft.) in load line length. To meet the new criteria, these vessels will employ Selective Catalytic Reduction, or SCR, systems. DLBA has looked into how these systems impact the already tight spaces in engine/equipment areas. This will be particularly challenging on sportfishing yachts where the current machinery layouts are space optimized leaving little unused volume.
The yachts affected by these new requirements will be those with an LOA of roughly 90 feet and above. Design and construction changes will be required for these vessels to house the new systems. DLBA has also evaluated the possibility of adding a hybrid propulsion system within the added available space due to the integration of the SCR system. The electric propulsion can be used while trolling and in and around the dock, resulting in quiet operation and minimal exhaust gases as well as reducing hours on the main engines. DLBA’s study looks at a wide range of variables, including space allocation, aesthetics, weight, and cost. Keep an eye out in upcoming industry publications for more details.
