Norfolk Dredging Company (NDC)-160

May 2, 2022

DLBA has once again been selected by NDC of Chesapeake, VA to support them, this time for performing a stability test for the crane barge NDC-160 for the U.S. Coast Guard Certificate of Inspection (COI).  This will be the third vessel in the NDC fleet that DLBA has conducted regulatory stability testing for over the past year.

The NDC-160 started service as a 160’x 56’ x 8’ deck barge built by C&C Marine and Repair Inc. of Belle Chasse, LA.  NDC has added an American 9310 crawler crane and 2 Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit (TEU) shipping containers to assist in dredging operations.  The addition of the equipment requires the vessel to now meet more stringent stability criteria.

DLBA is working with the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) to reclassify the vessel as a crane barge.  DLBA will perform the inclining experiment, which provides essential data for the required hydrostatic calculations, using a single pendulum and two calibrated digital inclinometers.  Typical inclining experiments use 3 long pendulums to measure vessel deflection.  In the case of NDC-160, there are no points tall enough on the vessel itself to hang these pendulums.  American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) allows the use of up to 2 digital inclinometers at the 3 required measurement stations.  The result is, many man hours saved not having to build temporary pendulum towers, and also time saved during the experiment reading vessel inclination.
