Emission Requirements for Recreational vessels comes into effect January 2021

When new technical requirements are introduced, it often indicates that new design innovations are on the horizon. From January 1 2021, IMO Tier III emission requirements will come into effect for recreational vessels with a load line length of over 24 meters. The rules apply to diesel engines over 600 BKW and require, in short, the use of a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) to reduce the emission of nitrogen oxides (NOx).

SCR technology for marine engines is developing rapidly. There are several products on the market from commercial providers available for integration with a marine diesel engine. However, the arrangements and usable accommodation volume in smaller yachts within the 24-35 meter range are slightly impacted. The rule of thumb is that the volume of the SCR is about ½ the volume of the diesel engine and there’s auxiliary equipment which means the net result is a larger engine room. The DLBA team is currently working on clever ways to integrate these new components and develop yacht designs that minimize the holistic impact of new systems.
